Congratulations to Pope Benedict XVI

As of a few minutes ago, the Vatican has announced that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany has been elected pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

Cardinal Ratzinger has chosen the name Pope Benedict XVI.

I heard that the new pope was a nazi during WWII. Is that true?

I've been watching the news and here is what they have reported regarding this issue.

Cardinal Ratzinger was a German citizen who was drafted by the Nazi army during World War II. He deserted the army, a crime that was punishable by death.

I don't think this is a real issue. I think some are trying to make an issue out of this, because they don't like the Catholic Church.

I do believe reading that he admitted being a member of the Hitler Youth as a teenager, but at that time all German teens were required to be members.

He risked his life in deserting the German Army for not believing the garbage that Hitler was spewing. No sense raking up garbage from over 60 years ago.
