BREAKING NEWS: Katherine Harris to run for U.S. Senate

As reported by CNN's Inside Politics, the Miami Herald, and the Associated Press, it's official! Congresswoman Katherine Harris (R-Sarasota) will run against Democratic Senator Bill Nelson for the United States Senate.

The race will be one of the hottest in the country. Harris, most known for her role as the Florida Secretary of State in the controversial 2000 presidential election, is seen by most as a political moderate who has access to a lot of campaign money. Senator Nelson will surely have the most difficult campaign of his career in 2006.

Amen to that. She's the poster child for what a US Senator should NOT be.

I think that Harris is going to be very strong and she really could win. The preceding comments worry me, because I think that too many Dems are going to think this race is a slam-dunk. It is going to be ugly. If the Dems play the 2000 election card, Dems lose. The majority of people are sick of hearing about the 2000 election. It's over - Bush won.

Dems need to go after Harris and "attack, attack, attack" - from an old memo of Karl Rove. But not in the typically Dem whiney attacks. They need to start attacking like the GOP. Instead of saying that the attacks on Max Cleland were bad, we should say "Damn, why didn't we do that first!"

I don't disagree with the above comment, instead, my remarks were predicated on the fact that almost every piece of evidence points to the reality that Harris was about the only Republican that Nelson could beat.

Certainly, anybody with a 35 percent re-elect (according to Quinnipiac..sp?) is going to have a tough time of it. But I would take Harris over a Bush, Jennings or Gallagher any day of the week.

Not true. No one knows her record in Sarasota, and frankly no one cares. She'll be very strong and Democrats should be very nervous. Katherine Harris is going to be a very strong challenger.
